Not my cup of tea but it was an enjoyable read in some aspects。 I thought the characters were too extreme but lacked depth and I didn’t find the writing as interesting/humorous as others have said。 I would have appreciated more complexity in the conversations about religion and science。 Knowing the dog’s thoughts were neither helpful to the narrative nor entertaining。 Three stars because I enjoyed it enough to finish it relatively quickly and it had some redeeming moments， but overall I think it Not my cup of tea but it was an enjoyable read in some aspects。 I thought the characters were too extreme but lacked depth and I didn’t find the writing as interesting/humorous as others have said。 I would have appreciated more complexity in the conversations about religion and science。 Knowing the dog’s thoughts were neither helpful to the narrative nor entertaining。 Three stars because I enjoyed it enough to finish it relatively quickly and it had some redeeming moments， but overall I think it’s overrated。 。。。more

2。5 stars。 I may come back later and round this up to a three because I’m probably being overly harsh on it。 But my expectations were so high for this book because of its premise （women in science） and the fact that everyone I know who has read it has loved it。 But this book was just…not what I wanted it to be。 The plot and story I can definitely get behind and even found enjoyable but I couldn’t stand how the characters and dialogue are written。 It’s way too heavy-handed and over the top。 The w 2。5 stars。 I may come back later and round this up to a three because I’m probably being overly harsh on it。 But my expectations were so high for this book because of its premise （women in science） and the fact that everyone I know who has read it has loved it。 But this book was just…not what I wanted it to be。 The plot and story I can definitely get behind and even found enjoyable but I couldn’t stand how the characters and dialogue are written。 It’s way too heavy-handed and over the top。 The way Elizabeth says “pass the sodium chloride” as if that is how scientists talk， the way every man she encounters is a cartoon villain， the way her child knows the periodic table in preschool and is reading Sound and the Fury as an elementary schooler - it’s all so unbelievable that it makes it hard to connect with the characters， which I desperately wanted to do。 The anachronistic nature of Elizabeth’s character as if a woman in the current age was transported back to the 1950s also took me out of the story; it wasn’t believable at all。 I feel the reliance on tropes and brow beating with its message actually undermines the really important message of the book in the first place。 I’m sad because I really wanted to like this book， but maybe once I have some distance from it I will look back on it more fondly than I feel now， which is mostly just let down。 。。。more
